Jim Marshall 1923 – 2012

This morning Iron Maiden ordered another double Marshall head case, sadly, this afternoon I heard about the passing of Jim Marshall OBE whose guitar amplifiers are used by Maiden along with many of the biggest names in rock.

Jim Marshall was was the founder of Marshall Amplifiers, his customers included some of rock’n'roll’s most prominent guitarists. and his products seen on just about every stage around the world. His iconic ‘ Marshall Stack’ came about in 1959 and become a defining feature in rock bands’ backlines for generations and lead to Jim becoming known as “The Father of Loud”, at 3D Cases we lost track of how many Marshall 4×12 flight cases we have made over the decades. it seemed to us just about every guitarist had them, many of them with dozens stacked high upstage and defiantly the most popular flight cased item in the world.

As we learnt today, in addition to the creation of the amps chosen by countless guitar heroes and game-changing bands, Jim was also an incredibly humble and generous man who, over the past several decades, has quietly donated many millions of pounds to worthy causes.

Jim Marshall will be remembered alongside the likes of Les Paul and Leo Fender and as one of the founding members of the modern electric guitar sound, in fact the sound of rock music itself.

It goes without saying that our thoughts at 3D Cases are with Jim’s family, friends and colleagues.

Rest in peace Jim Marshall OBE.

You allowed many artists and rock fans enjoy music at it’s best

You can leave your condolences on the Jim Marshall website

As well as our custom flight cases and custom 19″ racks 3D Flight Cases also offer a huge range of standard sized cases and racks, of which around 1200 have been assigned NATO Stock Numbers.

We have now added a searchable list of all NATO Stock numbers for all our products that have these codes.

A NATO Stock Number, or as it is known in the USA, a National Stock Number (NSN) consists of a 13-digit numeric code and is recognized by all NATO countries and identifies all ‘ standardized material items of supply ‘.

These are not only used by the military but by relief agencies around the globe, government offices and by many countries outside NATO including for example Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Pish – a liittle worse for wear in a middle east watering hole

You and I have, with the help of some incredible colleagues and friends have had some of the best times of our lives here and overseas – shit gigs, good gigs, high profile global live TV gigs to pub gigs and gigs for our mates in their farm house front room, and if anyone can fuck it up and bring it to a holt you can, and in style! But we have ‘got away’ with them all – well there was this time when the BBC put up ‘Due to technical problems…. ‘ enough said.

My camera was a little worse for wear here as well

Pish, Happy Birthday mate, I will be back in Peterborough on Friday for a few days - fancy a drink?

Black Sabbath’s legendary guitarist Tony Iommi has been diagnosed with early stage Lymphoma.

Lymphoma is a cancer and treatment might involve chemotherapy and in some cases radiotherapy and/or bone marrow transplantation, and can be curable depending on the histology, type, and stage of the disease.

The official statement reads:

‘With the news that Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi has been diagnosed with the early stages of lymphoma, his bandmates would like everyone to send positive vibes to the guitarist at this time. Iommi is currently working with his doctors to establish the best treatment plan–the “IRON MAN” of Rock & Roll remains upbeat and determined to make a full and successful recovery.

This comes as Black Sabbath–Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass) and Bill Ward (drums)–are writing and recording their first album in 33 years in Los Angeles (still set for release this fall) with producer Rick Rubin. They will now go to the UK to continue to work with Tony. Further information will be released as it becomes available.’

3D Flight Cases wish Tony a speedy and full recovery.

Flight Case Construction

3D Flight Cases take delivery of their new aluminium extrusions during this December, designed to make flight case construction stronger and lighter. Made from a high grade aluminium billet, once extruded each section is baked in an oven for 24 hours to increase the hardness up to an aircraft grade quality. This extra treatment ensures that during its life on the road it will not dent, snag or burr like conventional aluminium used in flight case manufacturing.

In total, 3D Flight Cases will take delivery of ten new flight case extrusions including sections for 7mm flight cases, 10mm flight cases and 13mm flight cases. Each includes the flight case edging ‘double leg ’ angle, which is designed to allow fixing rivets to pull through the outside aluminium, the case panel material and finally through an inside aluminium ensuring a secure fixing unlike a single leg angle. This extrusion also incorporates a large radius which not only makes it more comfortable to handle the case but also helps reducing burrs during use. Along with each section there is also a new male and female to allow secure lid closure. Finally there is a ‘Lid Maker’ extrusion designed to mate with the 7mm for producing even lighter and smaller cases where needed.

Continuing 3D’s investment in professional flight case design new corner braces and steel corners have been produced to suit the large radius of the aluminium angle.

The Peli 1510 LOC (Laptop Overnight Case), is a refinement of the popular Peli 1510 design, ideal for the business traveler with a fully enclosed apparel compartment in the main body, a padded laptop sleeve and accessory pouch in the lid and is within the FAA maximum ‘carry on’ hand baggage size.

Inside the Peli 1510LOC has a detachable padded laptop sleeve and accessories pouch which will fit notebook computers up to 14.4″ x 11.1″ x 1.7″ in size and will keep your notebook computer segregated from the rest of your carry-on luggage, so you do not need to reveal the contents of your 1510LOC to access your computer when in public. The accessory pouch holds items like your laptop power cables and other smaller items, keeping them segregated and organized.

Just received an email from Innes of Peatbog Faeries fame who recently took delivery of one of the new SKB 3i guitar cases.
‘The case arrived today and your right I’m not disappointed. Its just what I’ve been looking for and the G&L fits great. A very happy bunny, thanks’.

Having seen the guys many times at Cambridge Folk Festival over the last 15 years wearing my other hat as ‘crew boss’ for the power and lighting team on the site, I can assure you along with 10,000 others at the gig that they are a great live band and they have just been announced as a nominee for “Best Live Act” at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2012, having already twice won “Live Act of the Year” at the Scottish Traditional Music Awards.

For more information, photo’s and music samples including The Peatbog Faeries latest album ‘Dust‘ check out there website here.

They’ve taken their own individual brand of Scottish tunes to audiences around the world, from European Festivals, to Asia, Africa, America, Canada and Australia so Innes’s new SKB waterproof guitar case will be fully tested over the coming years.

Take care guys and hopefully catch up again at Cambridge next year.
